Veterinarians play a very important role in pre-purchase examinations of horses. To best assess a horse’s current and future soundness, we recommend a pre-purchase exam for every horse. A veterinarian’s role in the process is to explain and record any medical abnormalities that have been observed, while detailing any concerns that they have. It is important to remember that the veterinarian will be neutral, not guaranteeing the horse’s soundness and not choosing to side with either the buyer or the seller in the case.
During assessment of the horse, the veterinarian will examine:
- Musculoskeletal system
- And perform a flexion test of all the joints of the front and back limbs

A Coggins test is a simple blood test that identifies the presence of Equine Infectious Anemia, a highly contagious condition that causes your horse to become very anemic. This test is mandatory if you wish to travel with your horse. While most locations require a current negative Coggins test within the past 12 months, some places require them within the past 6 months. Ask the Green’s Creek Veterinary Hospital team to check for the requirements at your specific location in Dublin, De Leon, and the surrounding areas. Because we are a federally certified Coggins laboratory, we can offer fast results in as little as 45 minutes.
